This year’s Swing for STRIVE was a great day of golf, event contests, give-aways, prizes, silent auction, and dinner.
On Thursday, July 21, 2016 at Majestic Oaks Golf Club in Ham Lake 100 people enjoyed the sunshine and camaraderie and raising funds for STRIVE students.
Thanks to our host and sponsors for a great event.
The Fridley-Columbia Heights Rotary STRIVE program motivates eligible seniors to discover their own strengths and talents so as to increase their personal and academic achievement. STRIVE challenges these students to improve their work, gain self-confidence and discover the satisfaction of achievement. It is a scholarship program that recognizes and rewards students in the lower range of class standing who show the greatest improvement in grades in their senior year.
This has been a wonderful week of service for the Fridley-Columbia Heights Rotary Club. On Wednesday we volunteered to sort donated food and label jars of peas (!) at the Southern Anoka Community Assistance (SACA) program http://www.sacafoodshelf.org . This organization provides food, clothing and resources for community members. Then on Friday we participated in the 2nd Annual Chili Cook-off for Bridgeview at Lee Carlson Center for Mental Health http://www.leecarlsoncenter.org . It was so much fun sampling chili, meeting new friends, identifying potential speakers for upcoming Rotary meetings, and visiting with Anoka Rotary Club who had a table next to us! Fridley-Columbia Heights Rotarians also volunteered with Student Art Show at Banfill-Locke Art Center http://www.banfill-locke.org which our club sponsored. Members helped to hang student art work and provided hospitality at the weekend reception for participating students and their families. Rotarians motto is “service above self” and this was a great week to live that motto!
City of Fridley Community Development Director Scott Hickok gave an update on 2016 Fridley Community Development projects– new businesses building and opening in Fridley this year– at today’s breakfast.
District 5960 Governor Jim Hunt of White Bear Lake talked about Rotary goals and principles and promoted the Rotary foundation during his visit to the club on September 7, 2016.
Two former members (and presidents) reminisced about club history. Gordy also brought three photo albums to pass around. The former members are Duane Prairie (in white print shirt) and Joe Lapinski (in gold shirt).
At the July 6 meeting at Shortstop in Fridley, Outgoing President Bob Tholkes passed the gavel to the 2016-17 President Kristen Stuenkel. Bob served the club with great leadership and a special knack for making our visiting Rotary Exchange student Carlos welcome. The club looks forward to a productive year with Kristen at the helm.
The club also recognized Gordy Backlund for his many years of serving as Secretary of the club and the numerous Rotemporary issues he has penned. With this new year of Rotary, his role will change, but he will remain an important keeper of the history and will also continue to serve on the board.
